Essex Board Preps Fire Chief Structure Change
Select Board · Meeting of August 10, 2026
Essex Select Board moves toward a "weak chief" fire department structure ahead of a fall Town Meeting vote. Board members previewed an Aug. 18 joint meeting with the Board of Fire Engineers, Finance Committee and Essex Fire Company leadership after speaking with fire company leader Ramey Reeder, saying "it seems likely that this thing's headed toward a weak chief situation." The board approved the $346,142.61 weekly warrant, signed a revised Massachusetts School Building Authority letter extending a new Essex Elementary School's projected useful life to 50 years, and heard the town's DPW superintendent post has been vacant since December 5, 2025, with no qualified finalist found. Members also opened work on a government study committee with Town Moderator Jeff and resident Mark, who asked, "How do you sustain this for 50 years or more?" A preliminary fall warrant list topped 20 items, including DPW equipment, a possible Chapter 32 pension buy-back for call firefighters, and a cultural district partnership with the Essex Shipbuilding Museum backed by a $15,000 state grant.
