ESSEX — Selectmen defer shellfish permit decision, seek state study. Shellfish Constable William Knovak and commercial clammers requested that the annual limit on commercial permits be lowered from 94 to between 60 and 70, citing depleted beds, but the Board asked staff to consult with the state Division of Marine Fisheries before ruling. The Board unanimously approved a $122,733.96 weekly warrant, fiscal year 2027 insurance renewals, and an updated flag half-staff policy allowing the Board to lower flags upon deaths of current and former board and committee members.
The Board also voted to seek $75,000 at the May 4 Annual Town Meeting for road work at 30 Apple Street.
