Finance Committee reviews public safety budgets for FY27

ESSEX — Finance Committee examines public safety budget pressures and staffing changes ahead of FY27. Chair Jodi Harris and the Committee conducted a comprehensive review of Police, Fire, Ambulance, and Harbormaster departments, with Police confirming that full staffing has reduced incidental overtime. Fire Chief Hassel discussed succession planning concerns and proposed new positions including overnight in-station coverage and a Fire Prevention Officer role.

The Committee endorsed an annual HVAC preventive maintenance contract for the Public Safety Building and directed staff to monitor anticipated FY26 line-item transfer needs, with transfers to be finalized by June 30.
