Essex School Building Committee Advances Three Architect Proposals to MSBA Designer Review
ESSEX — July 22, 2025 — Essex School Building Committee reaches informal consensus on JCJ Architecture ahead of MSBA designer selection panel. The committee reviewed three proposals — from JCJ Architecture, Lavallee Brenzinger, and Marianne Thompson Associates — at its July 22 meeting, with district designer selection panel members Gordon Brewster, Pam Bodwin, and Michelle Cresta reporting broad agreement that JCJ represented the strongest submission based on its MSBA experience, prior work on the regional district's Memorial School project in Manchester-by-the-Sea, and demonstrated ability to manage community engagement in a two-town regional setting. Lavallee Brenzinger drew interest for its design ideas but faced questions about whether its MSBA project history belonged to the firm itself or to staff hired from other practices, with one member noting the firm appeared to have completed "maybe one" MSBA project as a team. Marianne Thompson Associates was faulted for having no MSBA experience and no Massachusetts public procurement history, though member Ariel — an architect at CBT Architects — urged the committee to give all three firms a fair hearing at interviews, which are scheduled for August 12 before the MSBA designer selection panel.
